"To be yourself in a world that constantly try to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment." -Ralph Waldo Emerson
It has not yet unanimous opinion. Beliefs held by 100% of the population are not called notice, they are called facts. Apart from the most basic truths (2 + 2 = 4, the sky is blue), 100% belief in anything is increasingly rare.
Change, by definition, requires us to adopt a new opinion (or vice versa). If we seek to change ourselves or the world that surrounds us, there is no transformation without the introduction of a new idea. And new ideas are almost always filled with the confrontation at a certain level.
For me, this has happened a few hours only after the decision to remove our useless possessions and continue the minimalism. I made a phone call to my mother for him say the new. She was less happy. She had a lot of preconceived ideas on minimalism - at any given time even ask aloud how we were going to eat if we stopped to go to the grocery store.
We laugh at this subject now, but in the moment, this is important. Only hours into my trip, I was forced to decide if I would succumb to the pressure of popular opinion or if I would pursue what my heart told me to be true.
To be fair, years later, I learned to make minimalism differently and cut many of the common objections before they surface. Nowadays, there are rare is the individual who argues vehemently against my understanding to cases for minimalism. I learned to promote the positive aspects of minimalism rather than the negative aspects of consumption.
However, on a macroeconomic level, objections does not slow down. The stakes are simply too high. There are businesses and economies and Governments and personal livelihoods based on the pursuit of consumption and mass production. The introduction of any idea which seeks to demolish it all is satisfied with the confrontation. Need to stand firm against the Empire of popular opinion.
How then, in the case of pursuit of simplicity, do we hold an unpopular opinion? How do we stand firm against the Empire of public opinion on this subject or any other? If we are in conversation with family and friends, trying to live a counter-cultural way or only faced with our own thoughts, here are a few useful to remember principles.
How to have unpopular views
1. celebrate your uniqueness.Your life was never to live like everyone else. You look the same, you do sound the same, and your outfits more deep values are unique. That throw just to conform to popular opinion is one of the cruelest things you can ever do. And still it prevents you from living your life to the fullest.
2 do not forget popularity and accuracy are not the same. As the proverb says, 'do not think that you are on the right track, simply because it's a well beaten path.. Our desire should be to discover and hold the opinions of right, not just those who prevails.
3 effective benefits. Discover, remember and focus on the benefits of your belief structure. Be able to quickly articulate to yourself or to other why you hold the position that you are embracing the positives. In the case of minimalism, each time I have explain my decision of counterculture to others, I still have to highlight the benefits of owning less. It helps makes a stronger case for the way of life in my mind, their.
4 find the strength in the community. Not the same as alone are unpopular. From politics to religion to visions of the world, does lack not of opinions is available in our world. And, almost certainly, while it is unpopular, there are others who think like you. Find them. And discover the greatest determination because of this.
5 understand the counter-arguments.Critical thinking and questions go hand in hand. Know your opinion, but work hard to understand the cause and the arguments against it. If you are right, you have nothing to fear. If you mess up, you have everything to gain.
6 opinions humbly.During the examination of the opinions of all kinds, exercise humility with others and with yourself. We live our lives with certain assumptions and prejudices based on the experiences. Sometimes these experiments lead us to the truth, but other times they lead us away from him. Finding the right balance of humility and fierce determination in all of your opinions.
7 present your case boldly. I think have that less is a better way to live. Because of this opinion, I feel the responsibility to say to others and present the case for it when possible. After all, inviting others to a better way of life is an act of love. We must see it as such and stand firm against the opposition. This obligation remains true whether we are talking about minimalism or countless other unpopular views.
Your life is precious. It is the best asset you own. And it holds potential for great things.
Do not sink into mediocrity by living your life based only on public opinion. (who tweet)
